Recently celebrating its first anniversary, the Backstretch Clinic stands as a tribute to the generosity of John Hendrickson, who sadly passed away recently. The clinic was established in honor of his late wife, Mary Lou Whitney, and her love for the Saratoga Race Course. Thanks to John’s investment and collaboration with the New York Racing Association (NYRA), Backstretch Employee Service Team (BEST), and the New York Race Track Chaplaincy, we provided vital health care to over 620 backstretch workers during the clinic’s first year. This clinic is often the worker’s only access to primary or specialty care, and for many, their first encounter with a health care provider in this country. The dedicated clinicians, led by Alex Cardiel, MD, not only deliver medical services but also treat patients like family, providing them with essential items like food, water, and coffee, ensuring they stay healthy throughout the racing season. A gift to the Backstretch Clinic will ensure that we can continue to care for the people who care for the horses.
Your support is vital to the continued success of both the Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center and the Backstretch Clinic. By donating, you help ensure that everyone in our community—including the dedicated Backstretch workers who support the Saratoga Race Course—receives the care they deserve. Thank you for considering a donation to these important initiatives. Together, we can make a transformative impact on our community’s health and well-being.
